A to Z of MS Echinacea

Echinacea is a herbal supplement commonly used to speed up recovery from or relieve the severity of symptoms that accompany the common cold. It is believed to strengthen the body's defences against cold or flu-like viruses by boosting the immune system.

There are conflicting theories about the use of echinacea in multiple sclerosis.

While the effects of herbs on MS itself have never been specifically studied, the immune-stimulating effects of certain herbs, including echinacea, have been demonstrated in experimental studies. This poses a theoretical risk to people with autoimmune conditions such as MS, where the immune system is already in overdrive.

Conversely, echinacea is often credited with preventing or reducing the severity of viral infections. Given that viral infections can, in some instances, exacerbate MS-related symptoms and may even provoke a relapse, it is sometimes recommended as a protective measure for people with MS.

Echinacea may also possibly affect other medications. The disease modifying therapies drugs work by moderating activity in the immune system. As echinacea may stimulate immune cells, this may decrease the effectiveness of these drugs.

Further research is needed to explore the potential risks and benefits associated with the use of herbal supplements in MS.
